In 1949 when the Communist government took over China, a group of Chinese Anglicans followed the Koumingtang government and moved to Taiwan. With the help of the Episcopal church in United States, this group of Chinese Anglicans established the Episcopal diocese of Taiwan in 1954, which became a part of Province VIII.
The forming of the diocese can be divided into 3 stages: 1. The pioneering phase - under the care of 2 bishops from the United States - bishop Harry S. Kennedy (1954-60), and bishop Charles Gilson (1961-64); 2. The development phase (1965-1987) - under the care of 3 bishops from Hong Kong; 3. The inculturation phase - under the care of two local bishops - bishop John Chien (1988-2001), and the current bishop David Lai.
Since 1954, the diocese has established 16 parishes to help spread the good news; and to grow the spirit of Christ in our society through the education ministry of St. John's University and 9 parish-kindergartens.
We work cooperatively with our ecumenical partners, and our sister Anglican dioceses of New Westminster and Osaka to serve all God's people, to create educational opportunities for church leaders, to promote inter-denominational understanding, and to share and strengthen the faith of the church.
We follow the teachings and examples of Jesus Christ as expressed in the Gospels; and we follow the faith traditions as expressed in the historic Creeds of the Church.
Our mission:
- proclaim the Good News of God's Kingdom;
- teach, baptize, and nurture new believers and our congregations;
- seek peace and justice among all peoples.
- respect the dignity of all God's creation on earth.
For the 21st century, we hope that all members, with humble and obedient hearts, will continue to learn from God's Words, to be ready to serve, and to be joyful witnesses of Christ's new light.
