Keynote speaker was the retired archbishop of Hong Kong Peter Kwong. He focused on clergy being the faithful servant, reminding them to pay attention also to what is happening in our society to make Jesus' message relevant, making sure we do not compartmentalize God and God's purpose on earth. One thing clergy need to be reminded again and again is the importance of self care and the need for quiet time so we can listern better, reflect deeper and serve more faithfully.</div><div></div><br /><br /><div>At this conference, Rev. With his presence and the celebration of Eucharist, St. Stephen's formally became a mission station, with Sunday services taking place each week. This was a big step for St. Stephen's, sending out a strong message that it is there as a witness of Christ's love, and to welcome everyone into the Body of Christ.<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5226493411179479298" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 126px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 158px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" height="186" alt="" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_mIB9uM5M8Sw/SIg8EPpFwQI/AAAAAAAAAFk/3dI72Yr-W1E/s200/St.Stephen%27s+Center.JPG" width="150" border="0" />Our Diocese - current mission and future hope:http://www.blogger.com/profile/18388491857022942180noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9056943490567201695.post-53186891117110013152008-07-24T15:34:00.014+08:002008-07-24T16:14:41.923+08:002008 EAM Consultation in Kaohsiung, Taiwan<a href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_mIB9uM5M8Sw/SIg4rg8dJkI/AAAAAAAAAFU/6XEl95q9u9o/s1600-h/EAM.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5226489687792494146" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 120px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 164px" height="178" alt="" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_mIB9uM5M8Sw/SIg4rg8dJkI/AAAAAAAAAFU/6XEl95q9u9o/s200/EAM.jpg" width="134" border="0" /></a><br /><div><div><div><div><div><a href="http://bp3.blogger.com/_mIB9uM5M8Sw/SIg2W5DyfUI/AAAAAAAAAEk/5Y-VaYSF87s/s1600-h/EAM+13.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5226487134465195330" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 173px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 120px" height="134" alt="" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_mIB9uM5M8Sw/SIg2W5DyfUI/AAAAAAAAAEk/5Y-VaYSF87s/s200/EAM+13.jpg" width="173" border="0" /></a> Our diocese has been blessed by the opportunity to host the 2008 annual EAM Consultation, and are thankful for the happy faces we saw at the conclusion of the Consultation. Not only is the weather constantly gray and dreary, so is the economy there. There is a high rate of poverty in Keelung, and with poverty and unemployment comes also drug addiction and alcoholism. So St. Stephen's Center opens with the vision of helping the local residents in Keelung stay on the right path, giving them a sense of hope, and giving them an alternative to dealing with everyday problems.<br /><br /><a href="http://bp3.blogger.com/_mIB9uM5M8Sw/R4264pBOD_I/AAAAAAAAADo/KC2CYeBl2S4/s1600-h/St.+Stephen"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5155982630655496178" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_mIB9uM5M8Sw/R4264pBOD_I/AAAAAAAAADo/KC2CYeBl2S4/s200/St.+Stephen%27s+Center+2.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br />Right now St. Stephen's Center offers after school classes from 4-7 p.m. during the week for children, a recreation program for children on Saturday morning, aand baptism classes for adults and youth on Saturday afternoons. But the Rev. Richard Lee, who oversees the center, hopes that in the future, the center is able to provide resources for those looking for employment, and financial assistance to families and individuals in need. So the center is looking for funding from the local government, the diocese, and also the parishioners of Trinity Church in Keelung.<br /><br />Please pray for the ministry of the center and also the people who look to the center for hope and support. Our Diocese - current mission and future hope:http://www.blogger.com/profile/18388491857022942180noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9056943490567201695.post-7814963295845887442008-01-16T14:41:00.000+08:002008-01-16T14:54:11.761+08:00Special Christmas Guests<div><a href="http://bp3.blogger.com/_mIB9uM5M8Sw/R42pEpBOD8I/AAAAAAAAADQ/7r6en2B2jFU/s1600-h/Children"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5155963045604626370" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" height="134" alt="" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_mIB9uM5M8Sw/R42pEpBOD8I/AAAAAAAAADQ/7r6en2B2jFU/s200/Children%27s+choir+HK+Anglican+Church+-+1.jpg" width="160" border="0" /></a> This Christmas Christ came to our diocese in a very special way. Apart from the intense discussion on the relationship between the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion, the bishops had a meaningful opportunity to participate in the reconstruction efforts for areas destroyed by hurricane Katrina.<br /><br />Bishop and Mrs. Lai were among the group that serviced a historical area in New Orleans. An area with high unemployment rate and populated by immigrants from Africa, it is still the most damaged area in New Orleans.<br /><br />At the closing Eucharist, a special collection was made and was designated for the reconstruction work in New Orleans or Mississippi. A total of US$1 million was collected, and the diocese of Taiwan contributed US$21,500 to the cause. <a href="http://bp0.blogger.com/_mIB9uM5M8Sw/RygNoNBm1MI/AAAAAAAAACY/j3kWFTWkfQA/s1600-h/House+of+Bishops+Meeting+200710.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5127363160103638210" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 180px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 128px" height="128" alt="" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_mIB9uM5M8Sw/RygNoNBm1MI/AAAAAAAAACY/j3kWFTWkfQA/s200/House+of+Bishops+Meeting+200710.jpg" width="200" border="0" /></a></div><div> </div><div> </div><div>(The picture to the left shows Bishop and Mrs. David Lai with Mr. Irvin Mayfield Quarted, holding the Elysian Trumpet which he uses to comfort the victims of Hurricane Katrina.)</div><div> </div>Our Diocese - current mission and future hope:http://www.blogger.com/profile/18388491857022942180noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9056943490567201695.post-86747835317611151782007-10-19T10:47:00.000+08:002007-10-19T10:58:16.679+08:00Visitors from Episcopal Church Center<div>The Rev. Douglas Fenton and Mr. Peter Ng visited the diocese the last week of September as part of a continuing effort to help start campus ministry in Taipei City. St. John's Cathedral is within walking distance from National Taiwan University, and therefore has great potential to minister and outreach to the university students there. </div><div></div><br /><div>During this visit, Douglas and Peter also visited Kaoshung, a city at the southern end of Taiwan. Kaoshung is the site for the 2008 Episcopal Asiamerian Ministry (EAM) convocation.</div><div></div><br /><div>Douglas and Peter also visited Church of the Good Shepherd, Shihlin, Taipei. Taitung; an area that is home to one of the aborigine tribes of Taiwan; and under the pastoral care of the Rev. Jerry Bai, a Taiwan Presbyterian priest.<br /><br />During these 2 ½ days, clergy and some of the clergy's families had the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Taitung, as well as immerse in the hot springs there. Clergy and their families also had meaningful small group conversations on their personal relationships, relationships with local communities and neighborhoods, and relationship with the church. These small group conversations helped to reflect not only on the challenges of their ministries and the effects they have on their personal relationships, but also reaffirmed the importance of a more balanced lifestyle and a more collaborative style of ministry within the diocese.<br /><br />The group was able to listen to Rev. Jerry Bai share his love for the people of Bunun, the challenges of ministry, and the fruits of his 20 years of dedication to the people there. <a href="http://bp3.blogger.com/_mIB9uM5M8Sw/Ru97jfWdSeI/AAAAAAAAAB4/G9xr9y1dV4Q/s1600-h/With+Jerry+Bai.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5111439951730133474" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" height="150" alt="" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_mIB9uM5M8Sw/Ru97jfWdSeI/AAAAAAAAAB4/G9xr9y1dV4Q/s200/With+Jerry+Bai.JPG" width="179" border="0" /></a><br /><br />The next clergy conference/retreat will be in early June, 2008. </div></div>Our Diocese - current mission and future hope:http://www.blogger.com/profile/18388491857022942180noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9056943490567201695.post-17881128494034308322007-08-23T10:58:00.000+08:002007-09-07T12:36:16.127+08:00Our English congregations<a href="http://bp2.blogger.com/_mIB9uM5M8Sw/RuDUe-Kp--I/AAAAAAAAABY/PZVAfd_hEbw/s1600-h/2007+English+congregation+group+shot.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5107315605986999266" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_mIB9uM5M8Sw/RuDUe-Kp--I/AAAAAAAAABY/PZVAfd_hEbw/s200/2007+English+congregation+group+shot.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_mIB9uM5M8Sw/Rsz5quKp-7I/AAAAAAAAABA/G35-k6eoB-w/s1600-h/2007+English+congregation+group+shot.JPG"></a><br /><br /><div>Presently, th diocese of Taiwan has 2 English congregations; one is at Church of the Good Shepherd, Shilin, Taipei, (<em><span style="font-size:85%;">picture of congregation shown on the left</span></em>) led by the Rev.
